Discuss The History of The WWII Buffalo Soldiers

IOT wants to hear from you!

Share your love of the heroic WWII Buffalo Soldiers here: Leave a comment »

Post images, links to websites, personal stories, or whatever is on your mind concerning the history of the Buffalo Soldiers during World War II, as well as your thoughts on IOT’s upcoming world premiere opera.

International Opera Theater, an experimental opera company that specializes in multicultural collaboration, plans to create an operatic tribute to the heroic African American soldiers of The 92nd Infantry who participated in the liberation of Italy during World War II, a feat they accomplished despite crippling segregation and prejudice both at home and abroad. The story of The Buffalo Soldier tells of the indomitable human spirit, the principles of universal brotherhood, and the value of self-sacrifice for a greater good. It is a story that should be included in the historical lexicon of future generations, and IOT’s opera will serve as a major step in such a direction. Given that the historical event itself concerns a multicultural collaboration, International Opera Theater is the perfect company to create such a theatrical tribute, with an American Artistic Director, Karen Saillant, an Italian Musical Director, Gianmaria Griglio, a South Korean set and costume designer, Mi-Kyoung Lee, African American and Italian opera singers, and other artists who hail from across the globe. Furthermore as an experimental opera company that specializes in world premieres, IOT has the experience to match the proper composer and librettist for this project, and to ensure that a full spectrum of theatricality be brought to the stage, by incorporating elements of experimental theatre, dance, and genre defying, multicultural musical choices. IOT has already garnered support from surviving Buffalo Soldiers, including author James Daugherty, filmmaker Fred Kowornu, The African American Museum, The Italian Consul, The America Italy Society, The Constitution Center, the history departments of Drexel, Temple, Penn, and Villanova, and many others. IOT is now seeking financial support for the development and production of this most important artistic endeavor.
