The City of Groningen is the hometown of theater artist, Gerhardus van Wilgen, now living in Philadelphia . Groningen is a mid-size town of almost 200.000 inhabitants in the north of the Netherlands. Art, modern architecture and eco design are as normal for people there as Shopping Malls and Drive Thrus are in the United States. Groningen has always been a rogue city that did it’s own thing. Van Wingen will talk about its much criticized traffic-circulation plan from the 1970s that has created the most bicycle friendly town of the world. He will also address Daniel Libeskind’s Master Plan for the city, it’s world renowned Mendini designed Art Museum and the planning and construction of the Groninger Forum, another rogue one-of-a-kind project that is supposed to be the meeting place for the future.
